Our Staff

Dr. Payne is a native of Jasper, Alabama, and received his early education in the public school system. Upon graduation, he continued his education at Birmingham Southern College graduating with Phi Beta Kappa Honors. He received his Doctorate of Medicine in 1964 with Alpha Omega Alpha Honors from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Dr. Payne completed his internship and residency at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1968 at University Hospital in Birmingham.

He practiced medicine in Hartselle, Alabama, before relocating to Tuscaloosa in the summer of 1969 and has been a practicing OB-GYN Physician since that time. Dr. Payne was Board Certified by The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1972. He offers a full range of gynecological services at West Alabama Women's Center. He maintains staff privileges at Druid City Regional Medical Center and Health South Surgical Center.

Staff Qualifications The staff at West Alabama Women’s Center is trained to meet the medical and personal needs of each woman faced with a problem pregnancy. Our medical assistants, nurses, and sensitive counselors augment the personal support services.

As part of our commitment to informed choice, we also educate clients and assist in establishing future contraceptive plans and goals.

The physician and Medical Director of West Alabama Women's Center is Louis T. Payne, M.D. Dr. Payne is a local, full-time, Board Certified OB Gyn physician and the only abortion provider in Alabama with hospital privileges. Our support staff, all long term employees including RN's, LPN's, and Medical Assistants are extensively trained and dedicated to providing quality, non-judgmental care.

Support staff includes Registered Nurse with experience in acute care or surgical/medical setting.

Our qualified counselors are experienced in women’s issues. The counselor will explain and make sure you understand the procedure, patient risks and possible alternatives and other educational information regarding the abortion procedure.

LPN and Medical Assistants are highly qualified and trained to offer medical assistance and personal support during your abortion.

West Alabama Women’s Center is licensed by the State of Alabama Health Department and is also accredited by the National Abortion Federation.

Professional staff is on call 24 hours a day to assist you with questions or problems after your abortion.

The West Alabama Women’s Center opened in 1993 and is the only clinic in Alabama that has never received deficiencies during inspection by the Alabama Department of Public Health inspections.
